Elements of Human Communication-- COMM 1050

I decided to take COMM 1050 for my Humanities course because that I felt it would help me start to understand how people communicate with each other and why they communicate the ways that they do.  I felt that learning this would help me as a future educator when dealing with the parents and students of my classroom.  During the semester we had many discussions about communication theories, whether we agreed with them, and if we have experienced it in our lives.  We also wrote a "Reel Paper" during the semester where we were to choose a communication theory and how it relates to a specific movie.  The link to my Reel Paper is below.  I hope you enjoy reading it!

Reflection

For the Reel Paper assignment we were instructed to take any theory of communication that we have learned about over the semester and relate it to any movie that we wish.  We were to discuss in depth many elements of how the theory related to the movie.  This assignment was quite a challenge for me.  Trying to decide on a theory took some time for me because there were so many interesting theories that we learned about over the semester and it was hard for me to pick only one.  I finally decided on using Symbolic Interactionism.  Once I decided on Symbolic Interactionism I then had to decide on a movie that it related to which was also quite hard to do.  One of the first movies that came to mind was Beauty and the Beast.  It was difficult to relate the theory to the movie at first but after a while it became very easy to see just how Symbolic Interactionism related to Beauty and the Beast.

Throughout the semester during discussions we were to relate the theories that we were learning to situations that we have dealt with in the past.  Relating the theories to our actual lives helped me to understand the theories in depth further.  By relating Symbolic Interactionism to Beauty and the Beast it helped me to recognize how to relate communication theories not only to "real life" but to many different outlets such as movies, television, and even music.  Communication theories can be seen in everyday life one way or another.
